Exclusive commemorative Royal Wedding collection available at PhotoBox

We spoke to leading auctioneer, Peter Rixon, Head of the Collectors Department at Dreweatts, to glean three top tips for collectors looking to secure the best heirlooms on offer; be it to pass down the family tree or to reap the monetary rewards with future collectors.

The memorabilia collectors need to know guide:

  1. Follow tradition: Play it safe with a mug - historically the commemorative of choice - conservatively decorated with the Royal arms or a portrait of the young couple. The 'known continuum' is established and readily understood by collectors; so is easy to buy in to
  2. Don't splash too much cash: This is one area where cheap and cheerful works. Most commemoratives are produced for a mass market and are intentionally affordable. Kitsch can be cool, and if you are buying something practical, from a tea towel to a storage tin, it will be useful as well as decorative. Go too far 'up-market' in your purchasing and you will have to wait a long time for a return on your investment
  3. Look for a new slant on an old theme: Pick something that captures the mood of the moment or which, stylistically, represents the fashion of today.
